The first iSamples Workshop, held Jan. 28-30th, 2015 in Austin, TX, focused on socialization, assessment of current status of digital sample curation and access, and on establishing the organization of the RCN. The workshop included a virtual fieldtrip engage computer scientists on the workflows in the field for sample collection and on what apps and software tools are needed. Participants will toured the Austin Core Research Center (CRC) of the Bureau of Economic Geology where more than 500,000 boxes of core and cuttings from drilled wells are housed. The 53 attendees included representatives from the domain sciences, computer science, library science, data facilities, sample repositories, museums, publishing houses, and the petroleum industry. About 1/3 of the attendees were early career scientists, including graduate students from the Jackson School of Geosciences and the UT Austin School of Information.
