C4P and the EarthRates RCN recently hosted a workshop at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (Feb. 14th- Feb. 16th, 2018) that brought together several organic geochemists and representatives from the Neotoma Paleoecology Database and the SESAR Sample Registry. The workshop included trainings on how to upload data to Neotoma and how to register samples in SESAR. In addition, discussions were also held on how to improve and integrate these sample and data management workflows. Participants also talked about emergent issues, such as variable naming standardization.
Workshop outcomes will include a concise set of recommended best practices for biomarker sample and data management that will be circulated to a large targeted audience of organic geochemists. Participants plan to reach a wider audience by publishing a more extensive article highlighting meeting activities and recommended practices soon. This article will detail how better sample and data management practices could help the biomarker community answer new and bigger scientific questions. In addition, a workshop is planned to further share and train others on recommended practices at the 2018 Organic Geochemistry Gordon Research Conference. Stay tuned for more details!
